London riots

9 Aug

Jeez. London. Wow..

And Birmingham. And Liverpool. Just.. What?

Here are some excellent articles that have full sentences in them.

No one seemed surprised. Not the hooded teenagers fleeing home at dawn. Not Ken and Tony, who used to live in Tottenham and had returned to stand vigil over the missiles and torched cars littering an urban war zone. Tony claimed to have seen the whole thing coming. “This was always going to happen,” he said. From the Daily Telegraph (I know! But surprisingly good analysis)

Events last night took an unprecedented turn. As streets across London went up in flames it has become clear that this is new territory. Saturday night in Tottenham was one thing, the events of the last two nights have mutated into a very different form of street disturbance. From Left Foot Forward.

Shops looted, cars and buildings burnt out, young adults in hoods on the rampage. London has woken up to street violence, and the usual narratives have emerged – punish those responsible for the violence because they are “opportunist criminals” and “disgusting thieves”. The slightly more intellectually curious might blame the trouble on poor police relations or lack of policing. From The Independent
